Guyon, Janet E., (Cole), 85, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Home & Hospice Care of RI. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Guyon and a daughter of the late Lincoln and Lottie (Moore) Cole. Janet was the mother of Sandi Wall and her husband, Joe; sister of Charlotte Simmons, Norman Cole and the late Helen Lyons and Lincoln Cole, Jr.; stepmother of Richard Guyon, Robert Guyon and Michelle Wood; grandmother of eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was the former wife of Ken Grasley. Janet was employed as a dentist office manager for many years before retiring. She was a member of the Oaklawn Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon, teacher in the Christian Education Program and a choir member.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, September 28, from 5-7 pm in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 am in the Oaklawn Baptist Church, 229 Wilbur Avenue, Cranston. Burial will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Salvation Army or the Oaklawn Baptist Church, will be appreciated.
The life journey of Janet Elaine Cole (Grasley) Guyon began on October 19, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan as the middle child of Salvation Army missionaries Lottie and Lincoln P Cole III. She was sister to Charlotte Simmons, Norman Cole, the late Helen Lyman, and the late "Bud" Cole. She eventually settled in Newport, RI where she met her former husband of 27 years, Kenneth P Grasley, at a YMCA dance . Together they had one child, Sandra Lee (Wall) and as a military family they lived in Chicago, New Jersey, Washington DC, and finally settled back in Rhode Island. During that time as an Air Force wife, Janet devoted her time to Family Services, an organization helping military families relocate as well as assist with families in need. She maintained a close relationship with many of her military friends despite the distance after retirement.
In Rhode Island, Janet enjoyed a long career in Dental Office Management before her retirement. She was an active member of Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church in service as a Deaconess, Trustee, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. We would frequently find her volunteering in many church events including one of her favorites, making cornbread for the original May Breakfast.
Janet met Robert Guyon, a former Cranston firefighter, and thus began their 27 years of life together in Warwick, R.I. She was fond of music, particularly the sounds of Sinatra, swing, and Big Band era. Bob and Janet were a popular couple on the dance floor, drawing accolades for their smooth dance style. Janet quickly became close with her new extended family: Robert and Cindy Guyon; Michelle and David Wood; and Richard Guyon. As a blended family, she was extremely proud to become mother-in-law to Joe Wall as well as grandmother of eight and great grandmother of four beautiful children.
Janet's passions were music, church, cooking, friends, family, and most of all laughter. This is how she will be remembered. As a devout American Baptist, she also had an affinity for the paranormal and often said she planned on visiting us after her passing. We will know she is with us by a song … a vivid dream … the scent of her perfume… a memory … even a prank.
She passed peacefully on September 23 in the care of Home & Hospice Care of RI with her son in law, Joe Wall (a hospice nurse) holding her hand as she transitioned from this life. She will be missed by so many and will continue to live on in our hearts. Her family would love for you to leave your memories of her on the guest page.
