Obituary

Karkalas, John, MD, 89, died Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Venice, FL.  He was the beloved husband of Eftihia (Lolaki) Karkalas.  Born in Athens, Greece he was a son of the late Demitri and Corina Karkalas.  Dr. Karkalas was a graduate of McGill Medical School and did his residency in Elizabeth, NJ.  He held two medical boards, one in internal medicine and the other in psychiatry.  The former Chief of Psychiatric Services at the Institute of Mental Heath with the State of RI he had also worked for the Corrigan Mental Institute and Johnston Mental Health Services as well as being in private practice in Providence for 15 years.  He was a member of the American Medical Assoc. and the American Board of Psychiatry.  Past commander of St. John’s Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar.  Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Lena Karkalas DDS and her husband, David Berwitz of N. Kingstown and granddaughters, Kyra and Halle Berwitz. 


 


Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral service Wednesday at 10 am in  The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 175 Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston.  Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.  Visiting hours respectfully omitted.  Memorial contributions to URI Foundation, Hellenic Society, 79 Upper College Road, Kingston, RI 02881 will be appreciated.
