Obituary

Russell Freeman, 52, of Warwick passed away at Rhode Island Hospital on December 14, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19.

A faithful husband, committed father, loving son, brother and friend, Russell is remembered as beaming light with an infectious smile that loved to laugh, joke and love. Russell’s family was the center of his world and he was very much the “neighborhood Dad” earning him the nickname “Big Russ” by his children and their friends.

Russell loved his wife and children more than anything in the world. He was a friend of the community spending time on the PTA for Greenwood Elementary School during his children’s youth. He was the best first-base coach a team could ask for spending countless summer days with both his daughters at Apponaug Girls Softball. He was also the top assistant coach for his son’s recreational basketball teams at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Warwick.

He loved to travel with his wife and children, rooting on his Boston sports teams and the University of Rhode Island Rams. He climbed KoKo Head in Hawaii with his daughters, took trips to Sacramento and Pittsburgh with his son to root on URI in the NCAA tournament, and spent countless vacations with his bride at Disney World.

Russell spent 29 years holding various positions at the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston. He earned the roll as Lieutenant in 2014 but never forgot his roots as correctional officer, investigator, crisis intervention team leader and executive board member of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers.

Russell leaves behind his devoted wife and soul mate of 27 years Lisa, his three children Ingrid, Stone and Quinn, his parents, Jan and Dana Freeman, his two brothers Dana, Jr. and Keith, his niece and goddaughter Caroline, his mother and father-in-law Paul and Dawn Favino , his sister-in-law Paula Favino and nephew and godson Jarred Favino. He also leaves behind two K9 best friends, Rhody and Oakley.

A visitation will be held Monday, December 21, 2020 from 10-11 am with a funeral service at 11 am in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Honors by the RI Brotherhood of Correctional officers will be accorded immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers, PO Box 8273, Cranston, Rhode Island 02920, where a scholarship fund will be organized in Russell Freeman’s name. Face masks and social distancing will be observed. The service will also be recorded and may be viewed at his obituary on theQuinnFuneralHome.com
