Stanley M. Johnson 92 of Tupper Lake, NY passed away July 15 2014 in Warwick, RI surrounded by his family. Born on February 26 1922 at the Johnson family homestead on Racquette River Drive. (Byram Rd) to Wm. "Chet" Johnson and Ellen Knapp Johnson.
He graduated from TLHS where he was a member and captain of the Cross Country team and the Cross Country ski team.
In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center he met Marjorie Nieman of Evanston, ILL. They were married in 1944. Stanley was stationed aboard the battleship THE USS Maryland in the South Pacific which saw combat during WWII.
In 1945 he returned to Tupper Lake with Marge and resumed work at Wm. C Johnson and Sons, the family's general contracting business which he and his brother Bill owned and operated until retirement in 1982. Some notable local projects of the Johnson's are the original ski lodge at Big Tupper Ski Area, The Tupper Lake Post Office, the Library and the Clubhouse at the Country Club. Also to his credit is the building of the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mt. NY. The firm began construction there in 1955 and continued ongoing construction for the museum until 1982.
Stanley was a 70 member of the Masonic Order and was honored to be awarded one of the first Cornerstone Awards given by the Mason's for his many years of dedication, faithfulness and hard work to and for the order.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, guiding, tracking, camping, and boating. As a teenager, he climbed The High Peaks of the Adirondacks. He loved the many hours spent at Palmer Brook, his father Chet's Camp on the Racquette River just below Racquette Falls. As a young man, enjoyed membership at the River Ridge Hunting Club. He was also a lifetime member of the Packard Hunting Club.
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Marge, his parents Chet and Ellen Johnson, a brother Bill Johnson and sisters Dorothy Ouilette, Mary Ellen Hall and Emily Brown. He is survived by his son Wesley Johnson of Houston, TX, his daughter and son in law Marley and Normand Petrangelo of Warwick, RI, a sister Faith Day of Saranac Lake, NY and a brother Fenton Johnson of Montgomery, AL.
