Obituary

Walter J. Kane, Esq., 88, of Smithfield, died peacefully on September 3 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth M. Kane & six of his children: Cheryl A. Aiken (Dennis), Ruth E. Kane (John Runyan), Walter E. Kane (Kim), John M. Kane (Christine), Timothy F. Kane (Lori) and Kathleen M. Kane Verruso (John), eleven grandchildren: Karlene & Jeffrey Aiken, Caitlin & Margaret Runyan, Anthony & Austin Kane, Shayna & Jessica Kane, Timothy Kane, Nathan & Jacqueline Ray & two great grandchildren: Jared Smith & Janessa Kane. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis M. Kane.
Born in Providence, Walter was the son of Frank M. and Helen T. Kane. Walter is survived by three siblings: John D. Kane, Catherine Brown and Patricia Papineau. He was predeceased by sister Helen Caouette and brothers Edward Kane, Francis M. Kane, and William D. Kane.
Walter graduated from LaSalle Academy and Bryant College and earned a law degree from Suffolk University. He served six terms in the R.I. Senate (1954-1966). He became Clerk of the Rhode Island Supreme Court in 1966 and was State Court Administrator from 1969 to 1988. After retiring from the State he practiced law in Greenville and served as Burrillville Solicitor (1992-2006).
Walter also owned the Family Store in Greenville, cofounded Rally Point Racquet Club and the Smithfield Little League, and chaired building committees for Anna McCabe, LaPerch and Smithfield High Schools.
Most importantly, Walter was a family man – a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather and brother – and a loyal friend to many. He loved politics, travel, history, the ocean, and the New England Patriots.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 11am in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, corner of Putnam Pike and Rt.116, Greenville. Visitation Tuesday from 4-8pm in the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Pike (Rt.44) Greenville. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army or to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care, 1085 N. Main St., Providence, RI 02904.
